Changes in the Mac operating system leading up to Mac OS X have allowed premier data recovery companies to design programs that are able to recognize the file structures inherent in Mac code and from them reconstruct lost, damaged or deleted files. In choosing a program to recover Mac files double check to make sure the program you buy recognizes both Mac OS X and all earlier versions of the Mac operating system.

Test out digital photo recovery tools before purchase

Before you buy any program to recover photos here are a few tips to be aware of. First, do not buy any digital photo recovery tool that does not allow you a trial download. The reason for this is that many photo recovery tools simply do not support all camera types. If you have an expensive Minolta or Olympus camera you must have a program to recover photos that recognizes those camera manufacturers’ file types.

A basic digital photo recovery utility might be able to recognize on your computer’s hard drive popular image file formats such as jpegs and PNGs, but it can very easily skip over files deleted from your high end camera’s memory card. You may have to test out several digital photo recovery programs until you find one that works for you. Then and only then should you make a purchase. Another important feature to look for in a data recovery program is a simple to use interface. Many lower priced file recovery systems only work using command line language. This is far too difficult for the average computer operator.

Proprietary camera file retrieval from flash memory

If you have a Nikon digital camera that camera will initially store onto its memory card all of your digital photographs in the NKS format. Similarly Canon digital cameras use an exclusive format as do popular Minolta and Olympus upper level digital cameras. These file structures are known as RAW files. Your camera saves the most complete form of your digital image in its particular RAW file format directly onto your camera’s internal storage or memory card. From there the digital information is processed and changed into more conventional formats for storage on your computer’s internal hard drive. These formats use file extensions such as JPG.

After a successful transfer has been made the normal procedure is to delete the RAW files from memory cards so that you may load another grouping of pictures. But should the transfer be unsuccessful due to an interrupted download or other problem you will need to use a third party program for memory card recovery. Finding files in an NTFS formatted drive

There are two approaches one can take when attempting NTFS data recovery. The first is to simply purchase an NTFS recovery program that is built expressly and solely for that purpose. Indeed if one is attempting to recover lost or damaged files from a computer’s internal hard disk drive that has been formatted using the NTFS system this can be an extremely cost effective file recovery technique.

However a wiser course of action will probably be to buy a more generally based Windows data recovery software suite that allows for not only NTFS recovery but also recovery of files from hard drives using the older FAT system and recovery of any Windows operating system based files on attached peripheral devices. Very often these devices such as memory cards and USB flash drives are formatted in the older FAT system. The confusion results in that we can accidentally reformat an externally connected device in the new system and then have to attempt data recovery based on the newer file structure.
